Walmart Scorecard Helps Cut Packaging
Walmart’s buyers are now being iven sustainability goals for the product lines they rep- resent and have consider- able influence on how those
products are packaged and displayed, said
Ron Sasine, the giant retailer’s senior director
of private label packaging, at the company’s
seventh annual Sustainability Expo, held the
week of May 7 in Rogers, Ark.
Walmart buyers are increasingly making
their purchasing decisions based on information they get from the scorecard, reports
Packaging Digest.
At a recent meeting of Walmart’s Packaging Supplier Value Network, the company
Norampac Mill
Workers Concede
emphasized packaging sustainability as a way
to make its operations more efficient. The
group included leaders at Walmart and those
from supplier companies, academia, government, and nongovernment organizations.

Unionized workers at Norampac’s Trenton, Ontario, corrugating medium mill ratified
a new collective agreement
last week.
The company said last
month it would close the mill
June 1, unless the union
agreed to its demands. Workers had previously voted twice
and rejected the offer both
times, the Belleville Intelligencer
reports. As of press time,
there was no official response
from Norampac.
“We did what we needed to
do,” says Dave Moffat, Ontario
region vice president of the
Communications Energy and
Papermakers Union (CEP). “We
are anticipating the company
will remove its closure notice
and expect it will happen soon.
We ratified the offer on the
table. We have taken all the
steps necessary to keep the
mill open. It’s in the company’s
ballpark now.”
At stake are about 130
jobs at the mill.
