PPC REPORT
Carton Execs Are ‘Slightly Optimistic’
The Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC) released its second quarter “Business Sentiment Report,” which assesses
the business outlook of carton industry executives.
The PPC results for the most recent period show that
executives remain slightly optimistic about the future of the
industry. While anticipated capital expenditures on plant/
machinery and employee counts are expected to drop over
the next three months, orders have increased over the past
quarter and spending on product and process innovation
and employee training/retraining are expected to increase.
Overall output volume is also expected to rise during the
next quarter.
Access to the full quarterly report is available to PPC
members. For more information, contact Ben Markens,
president, at ben@ppcnet.org or 413-686-9181.

Pro Carton Brochure
Addresses Carbon Footprint
The latest brochure from Pro Carton, the European Association of Carton and Cartonboard manufacturers, describes
the improving environmental performance of the cartonboard
and carton industry. Pro Carton’s data show that the environmental performance of the industry is improving in all major
impact categories and that the average carbon footprint of
cartons has gone down by 7 percent in the last three years.
The brochure also highlights key conclusions of a new
report by IVL Swedish Environmental Institute, which
describes a methodology for measuring biogenic carbon
in cartons by relating the carbon benefits of its natural and
renewable raw material, which comes from the forest, to
cartons. The report says the demand for cartons improves
carbon sequestration, choosing cartons promotes the use of
renewable energy; and recycling cartons stores carbon and
helps avoid emissions.
